The development of new materials, components and technologies, in which universities play a significant role, is becoming ever more important for industry. In recognition of the contribution made by academic institutes, Zwick rewards young researchers for outstanding scientific work in which the use of materials testing machines plays a major part.
The Zwick Science Award was presented this year during the Zwick Academia Day at RWTH Aachen University in April. The recipient was 32-year-old industrial engineer Daniel Raabe, who has developed a biologically inspired test method for dental materials. Second prize was shared by Ismael Abdel Maksoud of the German University in Cairo and Roderich Zeiser of the University of Freiburg. In 2010 more than 50 academic papers from just under 20 different countries were submitted. Entries for the Zwick Science Award are invited once again in 2011; participation is conditional on the publication of a scientific paper within the last 5 years.
First prize is €5,000 and the winner will also receive the Paul Roell Medal. Second and third prizes are €2,000 and €1,000 respectively. The awards will be presented during the Zwick Academia Day, to be held at a German university in March 2012. The closing date for entries is 1 November 2011.
